I just think that the Japanese PM’s statement is needlessly provocative. We might have different views over whether China’s response is excessive, but the Japanese provocation has no justification, even within the narrow terms of Japan’s self interest. Just provocative for no good reason.

Really appreciate the nuanced analysis here. The concept of "competition plus management" as the pragmatic path forward captures something important that gets lost in more alarmist takes. What stood out to me was the point about Takaichi making explicit what was previoulsy implicit - Japan has long viewed Taiwan through a security lens, but verbalizing it at the PM level fundamentally changes the diplomatic calculus. The US retrenchment angle is particularly intresting because it creates this paradox where Japan feels less secure but also has more room to maneuver independently, which could actualy increase instability rather than reduce it.
